There, now you know me. And you likely understand why I am so drawn to the brilliantly warm, tactile work of Wayne Bresinka (whom I discovered through a friend who was raving about his Diana Krall posters/branding).

Do check out Bresinka's blog, where he documents his project from inception to completion. Makes me want to spend the weekend holed up in my apartment collaging!

Andrew Bird has always been, and likely always will be, one of my all-time favorite musicians. In my humble opinion, he is one of the more brilliant, innovative artist of our time. Having been following his career for nearly a decade and seen him perform numerous times, I am thrilled that his new documentary Andrew Bird: Fever Year (directed by Xan Aranda) will be presented at this years Vancouver International Film Festival.

Shows times are October 8, 10 & 14 in Vancouver and tickets are $10-$12. Details here.

Yes, it has been a while. Life has been crazy and since working from the office again, I've been trying to stay off the computer outside of office hours.
But -- I wanted to quickly share a silkscreen project I recently completed. Audentes Fortuna Iuvat translates loosely to Fortune Favours the Brave. Hand rendered type was digitized, burned to screen and printed on shirts, canvas bags and paper.

The snow arrived here in Vancouver last night, and turned our city into a temporary winter wonderland. After an admittedly crazy week, it was the perfect excuse to curl up inside with a good book, great wine, and watch the snow fall while listening to old Christmas albums on the record player.

This morning, as I left the house for coffee, I passed my favorite holiday shop window -- 18 Karat. Their storefront just oozes holiday, texture-y, warm & fuzzy fabulousness... and so does their online catalogue, which I would highly recommend you check out.

Upholstering is such an intimate experience... undoing every layer, seam and nail someone had painstakingly assembled, sewn and hammered many, many years ago...

After many hours of de-upholstering (is that a word?), sanding, staining, sewing, stapling... my painstaking work is finally complete!

Happy Monday, loves -- hope everyone had a spectacular weekend. What did you get up to?
Between baseball games (can you beat baseball, beer & hot-dogs on a sunny day?), birthday parties & soaking up the sunshine, I embarked on a new [messy/labour intensive/time-consuming/exciting!] project... de-upholstering (is that even a word?) a chair that I recently acquired on Craig's List. I have high hopes for the finished product... I think she will be beautiful.
As I get closer to upholstery phase of the project, I wonder if anyone has any good tips as to where I can get some good/unique upholstery fabric in Vancouver or available online? I'm looking for something bright, maybe floral? Patterned? Thoughts?

I've been meaning to write about the Vancouver based Union Wood Co. for months now, but the gods seem to *really* want me to get on it now, as references to the fabulous furniture making company keep popping up everywhere in my life.

Now that I'm a bit more settled back in Vancouver, I've been looking for a home... and with a home comes furniture. Having sold/given away everything I owned before leaving on the trip, I'm thrilled to be starting from scratch, sourcing pieces I *love*.

For me, the heart of a home is the kitchen and dining room. It's where family & friends come together to eat, drink & laugh... so a good dining room table will be high on my list... and Union Wood Co. will be where I go. Using mainly reclaimed and re-purposed wood and other materials, they create beautiful, timeless furniture teeming with history and quality. I'm in love. Check them out here.

My week's been rather busy with work, but nothing to complain about. I woke up to dark grey skies and rain this morning, so I'm hoping the sun comes out for our weekend. We've met a new Croatian friend who is taking us to an outdoor "safari bar" tomorrow afternoon... so I'm hoping for blue skies :)

Not quite sure how to transition from safari bars to accessories... but maybe these headbands are the perfect safari bar accessory? haha. My head for some reason isn't overly conducive to headbands (I end up looking like I'm 12) but I think these accessories from Little Fille are pretty wonderful. Do you wear headbands? Am I the only one that ends up looking 12?

Back when I was in school, I was fortunate enough to visit the home & studio of a renowned typographer/printer/letterpress-wizard. Not only was he a printer, but he actually created movable lead type as well. Deep in his basement, among the ancient printers, hot lead bubbled, ready to be turned into beautiful lead type. I treasure the pieces of type that I was given from this visit, and had always thought about turning them into a necklace.

Yesterday, I stumbled onto Erica Weiner's website, and see that she's one step ahead of me! Her salvaged type is available in any letter combination of your choice and are dipped in silver & gold -- I think they're beautiful :)

...and today, I bridge the two -- violence & abuse prevention and fashion!

Day of Pink is the International Day against Bullying, Discrimination and Homophobia in schools and communities. [It] is a day of action, born when a youth in a high school in Cambridge, Nova Scotia was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to school. His fellow students decided to stand up to bullying; and hundreds of students came to school wearing pink to show support for diversity and stopping discrimination, bullying and homophobia.

So... throw on something pink tomorrow, and show your support!

How was your weekend?

Ours was more festive than usual... We woke up Saturday morning to a cover of Achy Breaky Heart outside our window in the town square... turns out it was the wine & olive oil festival here in Vodnjan! We spent the day sipping wine & tasting olive oils in the sunshine, while listening to Croatians do covers of English songs... it was fabulous!

Sunday, while halfheartedly working, Okkervil River came on. Okkervil is one of the few bands M & I don't see eye to eye on, so having not listened to them in ages, I'd forgotten how much I love them. There's something so "angsty" about them that I dig :)

I hope you're all gearing up for a fabulous long weekend... what are you getting up to?

Normally my Easter would involve a weekend of brunching... a long, lazy afternoon on a sunny patio with my girlfriends, and a festive, themed affair with my family at my Aunt & Uncles. This year, being half way across the world from our friends & family, will be quite different. I'm hoping it still involves lots of brunching & laziness, but it won't be the same without all my favorite people.

On a fashion related note... I'm not normally one to rock a lot of colour, but this Spring I'm going to make an effort! If I had anywhere to go this Easter, I think this would be the perfect outfit!

When M & I get back to Vancouver, we'll be facing the daunting (have you seen Vancouver housing prices lately??), yet exciting task of finding a new home. We sold quite literally everything we owned -- including our apartment -- before leaving town, so it's going to be a wonderful, fresh new start.

We've been daydreaming about our ideal home, but have also faced the fact that we have to be practical in our dreaming... unless we plan on moving to the suburbs (which isn't an option).

What's on your "must have" list for a home? Dream list?

Ours include lots of natural light, an open kitchen/entertaining area and a second bedroom/office. That's not too much to ask, is it??

(Our "dream" list is a completely different story, and includes vaulted ceilings, brick walls, reclaimed wood floors, a claw-foot tub, his & hers offices...)

Two things I love: Men with big beards, and chocolate. This post has both.

Beards & chocolate aside, I was blown away by the Selby's Mast Brothers Chocolate feature -- and even more impressed when I visited the Mast Brothers' site and learned more them and their work.

Bean to Bar chocolate makers are hard to come by. The Mast Brothers chocolate is made from beans sourced from family farms & co-ops around the world. The beans are sorted, roasted, processed, poured, wrapped & packaged in house by the brothers at their Brooklyn factory/shop.

For some reason the Breeders (90's Breeders -- not 2010 Breeders) always make me think of the summer. Hearing Cannonball can bring me right back to being 16, driving to the beach with the music loud in my old convertible Chrystler Lebaron. Those were good times.

Joel Plaskett is my new Breeders. My new summer band. He's fun, light & upbeat -- perfect for lazy days at the beach, BBQs, beers on the porch... Now if only I had my old Lebaron.

I've been looking for the *perfect* black boots for, seriously, going on five years now. I've bought boots to fill the void, but have yet to find that *perfect* pair... but I think my search may have come to an end. (Just in time for summer?!).

Now, I just can't decide between the Frye boots (far left) or the Espace boots (far right). The FCUK boots (middle) were disqualified for having a heel. I work from home so really don't need an "office appropriate" boot... and lord knows I have enough heels already...

My husband is both a music nut and a history fanatic... which makes Anaïs Mitchell's Hadestown the equivalent of Christmas. Hadestown is "a folk opera based on the Orpheus myth, set in a post apocalyptic American depression."

That sounded about as exciting as watching paint dry, until I checked out the talent line-up, which includes, Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver), Ani DiFranco, Ben Knox Miller (of the Low Anthem), and many more. I then *heard* the soundtrack... and it's incredible!

I bet this will be a fantastic and unique show. Check the website to see if they'll be performing in your town!

When M & I were in Morocco back in January, we discovered a fabulous organic vegetarian restaurant called Earth Cafe. It was hands down the best vegetarian food we'd ever eaten. We were fortunate to get to know Ben, the owner, and were invited to spend the day at his farm just outside of Marrakesh. It was truly one of those days that we'll never forget. Ben's property is enclosed by a tall handmade wall of straw and mud. Inside the enclosure live hundreds of rabbits, dozens of chickens, several horses, donkeys and dogs. Organic vegetables, olives and lemons grow abundantly. We drank fresh mint tea and ate bread made right before our eyes and cooked in a straw/mud oven. It was incredible.

Last night M & I tried to re-create our favorite dish from the Earth Cafe -- the veggie patty. (shown above) Nothing will ever compare to Ben's veggie patty, but I dare say we came pretty close!

Here our [very rough] adaption of the recipe - it serves two.
You can see the original recipe for "veggie burgers" on the Earth Cafe website.

2 x potatos
2 x carrots
1 x zuccinni chopped
1 x onion diced
1 can kidney beans - rinsed
1 can chic peas - rinsed
juice of one lemon
curry powder
paprika
garlic - minsed
salt & pepper
olive oil

boil the potato & carrots. drain & set aside.

in a bowl, combine the rinsed chicpeas, juice the lemon, some diced garlic, a glug of olive oil, 1/4cup of water and a few dashes of curry powder & paprika (to taste). mash it up - either by hand, or in a food processor. it's ok if it's chunky.

in a pan, grill the garlic, onion & zucchini until soft.

combine all above ingredients (including the rinsed kidney beans) & mash it all together!

heat a frying pan with a little olive oil & pan fry "patties" until they're a little crisp.

enjoy!!

One of my all time favorite books is Norwegian Wood, by Haruki Murakami. It's beautiful and odd -- a lovely escape. M just let me know that Norwegian Wood is being adapted into a film, and will be scored by the ever talented Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. The film is to be released December 2010 in Japan. Very excited!

The stunning stop motion film, Lost Things, by Angela Kohler and Ithyle Griffiths, featuring Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy, has been featured on countless blogs over the past week. It's an incredible short film... if you haven't seen it, do check it out.

After falling in love with the film, I checked out Kohler's website and was instantly taken by her portfolio of work. The composition, lighting and emotion results in absolutely captivating images.

Over at ESB the other day, a frustrated bride-to-be recounted her awful experience at Kleinfeld's Bridal. The staff were rude, rushed -- and to top it off, scoffed at her $2000 budget. I think I missed the memo on when $2000 was a scoff-worthy budget!

My sister-in-law wore a fabulous gown from BCBG [shown top middle] for her August wedding last year -- and I think she managed to buy it on sale for about $200. Above are a few other BCBG finds -- all for under $500. I'm *loving* the strapless dress on the bottom left...

Happy Music Monday! Today's three bands all have a bit of a country vibe to them... without being "country" -- I think you will like them :)

We had the pleasure of seeing, Canadian band, the Deep Dark Woods last summer in a tiny bar on one of the hottest days of the year. It was excruciating -- but so worth it... They really are an incredible band.

Deer Tick is a staple band around our place. Their album "Born on Flag Day" is flawless & flows perfectly from beginning to end. We've seen them a couple times and have always been blown away. They're on tour right now -- try to catch them in your town, you won't be disappointed.

Old Man Luedecke can put a smile on my face within the first few twangy notes of his banjo. Perfect soundtrack for those days when you need a little pick-me-up! Fun fact: Luedecke bought his very first banjo here in Vancouver!

M & I have been in Croatia, in a small town in the middle of nowhere, for two glorious weeks now. There is no hotel, no tourist attractions, (no reason to visit at all, really) and nothing to do. We have left the house exactly twelve times -- twice for dinner, the rest for groceries.

It's been one of the best weeks of my life. I'm relaxed & happy.
After two months of traveling -- packing our bags every three days -- I don't feel guilty at all.

Our days go something like this.... Wake up at noon. Drink tea/coffee in bed. Catch up on blogs/work/life while drinking more tea/coffee. M makes breakfast. More tea/coffee. More blogs/work. More tea/coffee. Read books. More tea/coffee. Go to grocery store. Pour a glass of beer/wine. Make dinner. More beer/wine. Eat dinner. Eat chocolate. Watch tv on the internet. Go to bed. Sleep. Repeat.

Heaven. Seriously.
That's all for today. Work's been nuts, so I thought I'd reflect on something happy!

It's been raining babies lately. In the past couple months we've welcomed five cute little additions among our family & friends. In our quest for unique, handmade baby gifts, I've fallen in love with these cozy cotton & chenille baby blankets from Bluebelle. // Travel Must Haves...

Good morning lovelies. I was listening to CBC radio 3 last night (thank god for streaming radio) and they were talking about how to survive a month on the road. As we're on month 2 of possibly 12 there are a few things that I have found to be invaluable.

1. A big comfy travel sweater. Something that can act as a sleeping bag on overnight train/bus rides, can be worn to bed... and then out to dinner the next night. Versatility is key! [image] 2. Power Adapter. Nothing worse than getting to a new country and having no access to power. [image] 3. Pouches/organizers. If you're living out of a bag, you want to be organized. Jewelry, power cords, socks, whatever... they all need their place. [image] 4. A travel friendly bag. Something fabulous you can fit everything into... [image... I loooove this bag] 5. Your favorite Tea/Coffee. To me, a good cup of tea is my happy place. So, when good tea isn't available, it's nice to have some backups. [image] 6. Suction cup toothbrush!! I'll never go back to regular toothbrushes. Somehow these seem much more hygienic (not touching dodgy counters and such) and way cooler (ha) than regular toothbrushes. 7. A good comfy scarf. Keeps you warm in cool climates, shields your eyes/face from light on overnight trains/busses/planes, covers your shoulders/head in appropriate countries... [image] 8. Slippers. No matter where I am, when I slip my feet into my slippers, I feel home again... [image] Oh! And not shown... Skype! It's been invaluable for work & keeping in touch with loved ones :)

Over the years, I've developed a rather odd obsession with ceramic/porcelain fowl. As to not turn our home into a ceramic bird museum, I've been rather successful at curbing these impulses (thus far). Thank goodness, when I stumbled on these porcelain Guinea Hens by French potter Heidi Caillard on our recent stint in Provence, I was able to demonstrate impressive will-power once again.

(Don't tell M, but... after a little hunting around, I was able to find my beloved Guinea Hens available online here and here. Perfect for the kitchen, no?)

M & I may not have dated, then later married, it wasn't for both of our rather obsessive interest in music. That first night we met, he knew more about the obscure bands I loved than anyone I'd ever met. It was love at first... conversation?

M now writes a great music blog (Paper Pistol) that I contribute to occasionally. I thought it would be fun to share on Habit some of the bands I'm diggin' right now - hope you like today's three picks!

Dan Mangan is my imaginary boyfriend. I just think he's amazing. There's something about the rough, soulful sounds of his music & lyrics that resonates with me... and I'm proud to say that he's from my hometown!

Langhorne Slim was hands down one of the best live shows we saw in 2009. Their tunes are in high rotation over here & never fail to a smile on my face!

I don't really know where to start with Andrew Bird - all I can do is suggest you start at the beginning. Dig up some of his old tunes, and make your way through to the new ones. Every song is a musical masterpiece (in my humble opinion).

// Vancouver Eats

Our fair city, Vancouver BC, is in the midst of hosting the 2010 winter Olympics. While we're trilled to be here in Croatia, a part of us wishes we were home to celebrate, take in some of the Olympic festivities... and eat at our favorite restaurants that we miss dearly!

If you happen to be in Vancouver for the Olympics (or anytime, really!) here are our top three places to eat/drink in Vancouver...

You can't beat the Black Frog pub in Gastown for casual drinks/eats with friends. Not only do they have impeccable musical taste (seriously... where else can you hear Black Mountain, Andrew Bird and Smog within seven minutes), but the drinks & food are cheap, the staff are great and the crowd is diverse. I'm a sucker for their grilled cheese & a pint of the local lager. ($)

For sushi, venture West to The Eatery for a less traditional dining experience. Eclectic music & decor, hipster waitresses, university crowd... and sushi that makes all that worthwhile. Try the Bob Marley roll, full of avocado, mango and tuna, topped with a cucumber wasabi paste. ($$)

M & my all time favorite place to indulge gastronomically in Vancouver is BIN 942 tapas bar. Heavenly tapas made with fresh local ingredients, lots of wine by the glass (so you can try a few!) and a cozy, but loud, atmosphere. Try the Garlic Butter Mussels and Beef Tenderloin Wellington. Go early to avoid waiting in a looong line. ($$$)
